    The numbers behind the calculator

    Ceiling height

The ceiling is almost always the limit. Shop Indoor Golf’s table puts the minimum at 2.74 m (9 ft) for golfers under 178 cm (5 ft 10 in) with a flat swing (2.9 m, 9 ft 6 in, with an upright swing), 3.05 m (10 ft) for 178–188 cm and 3.2 m (10 ft 6 in) above that. For a comfortable driver swing we add 1.4 m (4 ft 7 in) to your height and never go below Shop Indoor Golf’s recommended height (3.05 m, 10 ft, up to 188 cm; 3.35 m, 11 ft, above): the clubhead rises about 0.9–1.2 m above your head at the top of the swing, then come the mat (3–7 cm) and 15–30 cm (6–12 in) of clearance. Below 2.5 m (8 ft 2 in) most golfers hit the ceiling; Nordica Golf gives 2.5 m as the bare minimum, and BenQ says you “may get by” with it.

    Width

With the tee off-centre, 3.05 m (10 ft) works for one player (Carl’s Place and Shop Indoor Golf). Down to about 2.75 m (9 ft) is possible with the tee far to one side and padding on the wall. For left- and right-handers sharing a centred tee you need about 4.3 m (14 ft).

    Depth

Depth is the space behind the ball, the ball-to-screen distance and 30–40 cm (12–16 in) behind the screen. Trackman and Garmin give about 2.5 m (8 ft) from ball to screen as the minimum, but Carl’s Place advises never less than 3 m (10 ft) because of bounce-back, ideally 3–3.7 m (10–12 ft). Camera units sit beside the ball and get by with about 4 m (13 ft). Radars sit 1.8–3 m (6–10 ft) behind you, so they need 4.5–5.2 m (15–17 ft), and over 6 m (20 ft) for their best tracking.

    Screen and projector

The calculator suggests a 4:3 screen as large as the room allows, up to 3.66 m (12 ft) wide, and the throw ratio a projector needs above the tee and 1.2 m (4 ft) behind it. Above or slightly behind the tee is the most common position and casts the least shadow. Find a projector for that distance.

    Frequently asked questions

What is the minimum ceiling height for a golf simulator?

About 2.74 m (9 ft) for golfers under 178 cm (5 ft 10 in) with a flat swing, 3.05 m (10 ft) for 178–188 cm and 3.2 m (10 ft 6 in) above that, according to Shop Indoor Golf. Some players manage 2.5–2.6 m (8 ft 2 in–8 ft 6 in) with irons and a flat swing.

How deep does a golf simulator room need to be?

Camera units beside the ball need about 4 m (13 ft). Radar units that sit behind you need 4.5–5.2 m (15–17 ft) at the least and 6–6.7 m (20–22 ft) for their best tracking. With less than 3 m (10 ft) from ball to screen, bounce-back becomes a risk.

How wide does the room need to be?

3.05 m (10 ft) with the tee off-centre for one player, and about 4.3 m (14 ft) to centre the tee for both left- and right-handers.

Can I put a golf simulator in my garage?

Often, if it is deep enough: camera units need about 4 m (13 ft) and radar units 4.5–5.2 m (15–17 ft). The ceiling is the usual limit, so measure under the door rails and the opener, not just to the ceiling.
