What to look for

Size

A 4 × 5 ft (1.5 × 1.2 m) mat holds you and the ball. A longer mat (4 × 7 ft, 2.1 × 1.2 m) lets you stand on the same surface. The longest (9–10 ft, 2.7–3 m) come with a centre strip or a strip on each side, for households with left- and right-handers.

Thickness

Mats are 3–7 cm (1¼–2⅝ in) thick and raise you by the same amount, so every centimetre comes off your ceiling clearance. The SIGPRO Softy LITE is 3.2 cm, the HotShot and Real Feel 4.4 cm, the TrueStrike and the regular Softy about 6 cm.

Hitting strip

A replaceable hitting strip (Fiberbuilt, TrueStrike) lets the club glide like on turf and can be swapped when it wears. Fiberbuilt guarantees 300,000 swings on its strip.

Tees

Check whether you can use real wooden tees or only rubber ones, and where the tee holes sit on the mat. Some mats have no tee holes at all.
